Deze plekken liggen verspreid over een enorme variatie aan landschappen – van ruige kustlijnen tot uitgestrekte woestijnvlaktes en bergachtig achterland. Voor wie op zoek is naar bijzondere natuur, rustige dorpen of indrukwekkende uitzichtpunten, biedt deze Australische staat een schat aan mogelijkheden.
Een minder bekende maar indrukwekkende bestemming is Lord Howe Island, een afgelegen paradijs op slechts twee uur vliegen van Sydney. Met koraalriffen, wandelroutes zoals Mount Gower en amper toerisme is dit een van de puurste bezienswaardigheden van NSW. Richting het westen ligt Broken Hill, een historische mijnstad midden in de outback. Hier ontmoet je het rauwe hart van Australië: stoffige straten, oude pubs en een kunstscene die verrassend levendig is. De nabijgelegen Mutawintji National Park biedt Aboriginal rotstekeningen en rode rotskloven die je met een gids kunt ontdekken.
Ook bijzonder is Dorrigo National Park, onderdeel van de Gondwana Rainforests. Hier wandel je door eeuwenoud regenwoud over hangbruggen en paden met uitzicht op watervallen en groene valleien – een van de fotogeniekste plekken van het binnenland. Voor wie kust én bergen wil combineren, is Eden aan de Sapphire Coast een prachtige stop. Dit voormalige walvisdorp biedt toegang tot walvissafari’s, verlaten stranden en het nabijgelegen Ben Boyd National Park.
Deze mix van natuur, erfgoed en rust maakt New South Wales een topbestemming voor reizigers die het echte Australië willen ervaren – buiten de gebaande paden.
