Reizen naar Schotland met het wereldbekende “Loch Ness” en zijn afgestompte “Benn Nevis”, is Schotland gekend voor zijn ruige eerder natte Highland’s, waar menige verhalen over zijn geschreven. Dit land is één en al natuur, ruige natuur en een land met heel grote afgelegen locaties die niet voor iedereen zijn weggelegd. Op vakantie naar Schotland, naar de Schotse Highlands die liggen ten noorden en westen van de Highland Boundary Fault die loopt van Arran tot Stonehaven. Dit gedeelte van Schotland is voornamelijk opgebouwd uit oud gesteente. Gekend onder de klimgemeenschap, zijn de Highland ‘s niet van de hoogste toppen, maar bieden een uniek klimconcept die nergens anders ter wereld kan worden gevonden. Schotland beschikt over 2 grote Nationale parken gekend tot ver buiten zijn grenzen: het Cairngorms Nationale Park en Trossachs National Park.
Van deze twee exemplaren bestaan er ettelijke duizenden artikelen over wandel- en fietsroutes die hier doorlopen en behoren tot de meer uitzonderlijke types, die weinig voorkomen. Maar we hebben het wel over de Reisgidsen Schotland. De Bergen in Schotland, The Southern Uplands, de Galloway Hills, de Lowther Hills & Monadhliath Mountains behoren tot de meest bewandelde bergregio’s van GB. En met hun lijst van 29 National Trails, verdeeld over gans het land is Schotland top voor wandelaars en reisigers.
De Cairngorms beslaan een uitgestrekt gebied dat boven de 1067 meter ligt, met de bergtoppen. De Lothian Plains worden alleen onderbroken door de Pentland Hills, in de buurt van Edinburgh. De Trossachs is een gebied met mooie ‘lochs’ en ‘lochans’ (binnenmeertjes), ‘glens’ (valleitjes) en ‘bens’ (bergen). Schotland is ook heel aantrekkelijk voor onder meer de Highland games, en de Schotse volksdansen, en talloze hele oude kastelen die dateren tot de Middeleeuwen. Reisgidsen Schotland heeft zo zijn bekende plaatsen zoals “The Isle of Skye”, “The Highland‘s” & “Loch Ness”. De bezienswaardigheden in Schotland zijn teveel om op te noemen. Schotland is niet echt groot, maar wel degelijk te groot om te doorgronden op pakweg een paar weken.
