Known as British Honduras until about 1973, Belize is today no longer a British colony, but was granted independence in 1964. It is the only Central American country with English as its official first language, although Spanish and Belize Kriol are more widely spoken. Located in northeastern Central America, bordered by Guatemala, Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, Belize boasts more than 22,900 sq km with only approx. 370,000 inhabitants and one of the fastest growing population rates (2.2%) in the western hemisphere.
